Ha Long Bay
Long before the postcards, the bay was a harbour. Ships from other coasts sheltered behind the limestone, and their cargo came ashore smelling of wherever it had been.
This is the room where it was stored.
Tobacco hangs from the rafters. Vietnamese leaf, pale and honeyed, beside Tunisian, dark as cooked sugar. A slow fire burns under both, and the whole room tastes of it. Smoke gathers under the beams and settles in layers, each older than the last. Pink rose runs through it like light through a shutter, lifting the leaf without sweetening it.
Labdanum has soaked into the walls, black and sticky as the seam of a hull. Clove and cinnamon sit in open sacks by the door. Their heat belongs to the spice, not the weather. Dried hay is packed around the crates.
Voices carry from the quay, muffled by wet air. When the door opens the tobacco brightens. When it closes the resin deepens, as if the room were breathing, asleep on its feet.
Outside, the mist is cold. Galbanum comes through the door with it, green as a snapped stem, and bergamot crosses the water like a lamp on a mast. Both fade early. The room holds.
Under the floorboards, wood. Oud from Vietnam, oud from Laos, cut from forests on either side of one long border. It gives the smoke a spine and the dark a grain you can follow with your thumb.
Then the animal. Castoreum, a coat left on a hook since the last tide, still holding the shape of someone's shoulders. Ambergris lies beneath it, dry and sweetly marine, like driftwood bleached on an empty shore. Vanilla and tonka soften the edges. Saffron glints once, like a coin dropped between the boards.
Nothing here is clean. Everything has been handled, bargained over, carried a long way and kept.
On the body it becomes a collar, a scarf, the inside of a coat: resin, leaf and old wood, and under them the faint salt of a harbour the mist has taken back.
The ships are gone. The room still smells of them.
